From Procrastination to Publication: Evidence-based Strategies for Tenure-Track Faculty

Facilitator: Irena O'Brien

  • Are you sick of procrastinating and not living up to the potential you know you have?
  • Do you wish you could just get on with it?
  • Do you beat yourself up because your writing is not progressing as you think it should?
  • Does your writing project seem so overwhelming that, often, you find it difficult to even start?

If you answered "yes” to any of these questions, you’re not alone. In fact, 20% of us are chronic procrastinators. This workshop distills the research on procrastination to bring you proven strategies to help you move forward.

More specifically, you’ll learn

  • What procrastination is and what it isn’t
  • What procrastination really costs you. Hint: it’s more than just wasted time and energy
  • Why willpower alone doesn’t work,
  • The top 10 reasons why you procrastinate, and
  • Strategies for overcoming procrastination and getting things done that work

Irena O’Brien, PhD, is a Business Psychology and Motivation Coach, as well as a dissertation coach for In addition to coach training, she was a Chartered Accountant for many years and holds a PhD in Psychology. One of her big loves is research and she continues to do research at the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi, where she studies short-term memory and second language learning.

Being a recovering procrastinator herself, Dr. O’Brien became especially interested in studying procrastination after she realized that most of her business clients came to her for help with overcoming procrastination. Her coaching philosophy is to help her clients understand the underlying reasons why they procrastinate and then take consistent action that moves them forward.
