How to Write Grants and Win Fellowships
for Academics in the Humanities

Facilitator: Shanna Greene Benjamin

Are you ready to pull back the curtain on the opaque world of writing and winning grants and fellowships in the humanities?  In this four-week facilitated learning community, you will learn how to write a project statement that leaps off the page and sells itself. Specifically, you will learn the importance of: fit in fellowships, modeling in preparing application materials, and marketing in writing the narrative portions. By the end of our four weeks together, you will have a completed project description suitable for use in multiple applications.

Shanna Greene Benjamin, PhD is Assistant Professor of English at Grinnell College. A specialist in African American literature and culture, Shanna is currently writing her first book, In Control of Her Narrative: A Biography of Nellie Y. McKay. Shanna completed her dissertation under the auspices of a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Faculty Graduate Study Grant and Ford Foundation Dissertation Fellowship. The research and writing Shanna conducted as a recipient of a Ford Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship and Woodrow Wilson Career Enhancement Grant allowed Shanna to transition into the job of her dreams; together, a travel grant from the John Hope Franklin Research Center, an NEH Summer Stipend, and an American Association of University Women (AAUW) Postdoctoral Fellowship allowed her to advance her book project before returning to full-time teaching. Shanna looks forward to sharing the tips that helped her win these grants and fellowships with workshop participants.
