Demystifying the Academic Job Market: From Application to Negotiation

Facilitator: Badia Ahad

Approaching the academic job market can be a daunting experience. In a sea of conflicting advice (and often, misinformation), applying for academic positions can be both stressful and scary. This four-week workshop aims to demystify the job market and guide you through the entire process from "application to negotiation,” with a special emphasis on clarifying what YOU want, how to present your "best self” in your CV and cover letter, and how to prepare for your in-person, telephone or Skype interview. We will also cover the nitty-gritty of the on-campus interview (what and what not to say/do/wear) as well as basics of contract negotiation (what you can and SHOULD ask for).

Badia Sahar Ahad, PhD is an Associate Professor and the Director of Undergraduate Programs in the Department of English at Loyola University Chicago. As a faculty member, she has served on several research committees as well as regional and national selection panels for dissertation and postdoctoral fellowship awards.  As the lead editor at Savant Academic Writing Consultants, Badia has helped scores of scholars develop CV's and cover letters for academic positions. Her areas of specialization include assisting advanced graduate students entering the academic job market for the first time, as well as working with scholars to "re-brand” themselves after negative tenure decisions and academics who wish to make institutional transitions (from research to teaching and from teaching to research).
