July is our "birthday” month here at the NCFDD, and we’re jumping for joy! We opened our doors in July 2010, and this month we are celebrating the completion of our sixth year as a fully independent faculty development center. We are so honored to provide our unique form of mentoring and professional development to over 88,000 graduate students, post-docs, and faculty members at more than 450 colleges and universities in the U.S.

We celebrated by launching our latest pet project: NCFDD Travels! We have been wanting to host educational summer travel retreats so we beta-tested the idea in June. The NCFDD team hosted a trip exploring the history, art, culture, and politics of Barcelona, Madrid, and Málaga, Spain. We had such an inspiring trip that we are already in the process of planning next summer’s adventures (if you would like to receive information or join us next summer, send a quick email to

This month, we're giving you plenty of opportunities to gain a new perspective, step out of your comfort zone, and explore new opportunities! First and foremost, registration for the fall sessions of our Faculty Success Program and Dissertation Success Program are open. Plus, our core curriculum webinar, The Art of Saying No, will help you learn the biggest mistakes made in responding to requests, how to identify and disrupt problematic patterns, and our favorite strategies to implement immediately to add "no" to your vocabulary. And back by popular demand, Professor Chavella Pittman is presenting Teaching In No Time as our July multi-week course.

It's also that time of the summer where we hold our 14-Day Writing Challenge. That’s right! It’s time to join our two week, pop-up community for developing a daily writing habit. It’s a great way to experiment with best practices in a supportive community (see our feature article about the challenge below). I hope this month's resources will help you to amp up your productivity, get focused, and finish the summer with a joyful focus on your writing!
