Let’s Re-Think Mentoring

A Note from Kerry Ann

The Fall term is in full swing here at the NCFDD: we're back on the road visiting campuses to deliver on-campus workshops, we’ve kicked off the Fall Session of our Faculty Success Program and Dissertation Success Program, and we’re beta-testing a brand new program to help newly-tenured faculty choose and plan their post-tenure pathway. September is also the month that we focus on expanding our membership so we’re hosting both an Individual Membership Drive and Institutional Membership Drive (see below for details).

We’re also celebrating the fact that we wrapped up our summer session of the Faculty Success Program with the best end-of-program data to date. This summer, 95% of participants reported an increase in their productivity and 93% reported improved work-life balance as a result of participating in the program. We love hearing from participants about the community of support they find in the program and how it extends beyond the program (pictured here are FSP alumni Naomi Levy, PhD and Kira Banks, PhD who have had weekly accountability calls for 4 years running!). You can learn more about other Faculty Success Alumni and Dissertation Success scholarship winners below.

This month, we’ve got lots of helpful resources for you! Anthony Ocampo, PhD will tackle one of the most common challenges academic writers face: Overcoming Academic Perfectionism. And I’ll be teaching a brand new multi-week course on Re-Thinking Mentoring: How to Build Communities of Inclusion, Support & Accountability. I’ll be sharing what we’ve learned about the common problems that pre-tenure and post-tenure faculty members experience, why traditional mentoring programs fail to meet faculty needs, and a new framework for creating mentoring programs. See our feature article below (Why Mentor Matches Fail) for a preview of the content.

We hope that this month's resources will help you to overcome perfectionism, rethink mentoring, and experiment with some new skills and techniques.
