"As a tenure-track assistant professor, mother, wife, and commuter, I struggled to maintain a healthy work-life balance prior to participating in the Faculty Success Program. Before participating, I spent too much of my time on teaching and service and less on writing and research. I also found myself working in the evenings and on the weekends—time that I promised to spend with my family. I was not happy with the direction that I was headed in, and I did not know what to do to change it. The Faculty Success Program literally helped me to get my whole life in order. "I have always had a lot of ambition for what I wanted to accomplish in the summer and I have rarely succeeded. Although my eyes are still bigger than my stomach, I came much closer this summer to doing what I had hoped to do than I ever have in the past. Tracking our projects was one of the homework assignments we got in the program, and that seems to have paid off. "The FSP was wonderful for many reasons, however I am taking two primary pieces with me into the new academic year--first, a daily writing practice of at least 30 minutes. I think what I loved most about my experience was the program’s focus on prioritizing the two things that ensure success in academia, but are often shoved to the side in our busyness: daily writing and daily self-care. "This program showed me that it is possible to get significant writing done in short bursts at a time. At a teaching-intensive university (4/4 load), I found it challenging to make time to write. My Summer 2016 experience in the FSP went beyond anything I ever imagined! While I enjoyed everything about the program, I benefited most from my weekly small group calls and our amazing coach, Cleopatra! It was both refreshing and even therapeutic (academic therapy J) to have been grouped with other women of color who were not only tenure-track, Assistant Professors, but who were also, were moms with young children. We pushed each other to not only thrive in our academic professions, but also to apply the principles and tools that we were learning from the FSP (e.g., self-care), so that we could also thrive in our families. "As an Associate Professor serving as Interim Associate Dean of Faculty Development and Scholarship, I was acutely aware of the need for faculty to channel out the noise presented by various demands and expectations placed on us, and instead focus on our needs defined by our personal values and professional goals. The FSP bootcamp seemed to hold that possibility. After working with my school to support faculty participation in the program, I decided it was my turn to give it a try as my administrative role was nearing an end. My hope was that the program would help me to become more aligned with my values around work and my personal life. "Without the FSP perspective, my view of the world and how to function effectively in it as a researcher, would be much dimmer."

"We learned how to more effectively manage our time such that it reflected our personal and professional goals. I now have a daily writing practice that has translated into (in the last 12 weeks alone), 1 (now funded) Engage grant, an NSERC CRD in prep, my NSERC Discovery is well on its way, a CFI notice of intent to be imminently submitted, and several (3) manuscripts to be submitted within the next couple of weeks, along with several (4) in the process of editing by coauthors (to be submitted over the summer). This course has finally helped me realize how to balance my various responsibilities while keeping research front and center. A second big benefit that I have seen is (through a time-tracking homework) that I have reclaimed some of my personal time (while ramping up research productivity!) - with my son, my partner and just taking care of myself. I sleep 8 hours a night! And because I know I am more efficient at work, I can relax and enjoy my time away from work. This course has helped me realize that a mentor network (20+ people) is far more useful and a productive approach to solving problems for myself. Without the FSP perspective, my view of the world and how to function effectively in it as a researcher, would be much dimmer. I think the small group experience was also key to my experience - we held each other accountable to our goals over the semester. I would strongly encourage the university to consider sponsoring other new faculty (or even faculty transitioning to a new role) to take this course. It really helped me understand how I could succeed in this role (and what to do when I wasn't)."

"I joined the Faculty Success Program during a year-long sabbatical as a Spencer Postdoctoral Fellow. Six days before the start of the program, I lost my older brother to cancer. Personally, I was grieving on many levels and academically, I needed discipline, accountability, and time management. "As academics, we all know what we’re “supposed” to do, but in practice, it’s extremely difficult to find the time and energy to tackle all of the research, writing, teaching, mentoring, service and outreach demands. The FSP is so powerful because it trains participants in the strategies, habits, and mindsets that are critical to a productive, fulfilling career, while having a rich life beyond one’s career (as opposed to barely keeping up with a to do list that doesn’t necessarily reflect your own priorities or interests). It also provides an incredible support team (coaches specializing in certain skill sets, a weekly group coach, and a small group of fellow participants) that help to fine-tune the strategies to your particular circumstances (whether that’s balancing research and service, work and family, personal illness, etc.), and that provide the accountability needed to change habits for the long-term. The biggest gifts that FSP have provided me:

  1. A rediscovery of the joy and passion I have for science (since now I spend much more of my time on the science, as opposed to all of the "busy work" there is in academia).
  2. The tools to be more effective with my time, thus freeing up time for myself- professionally and personally.
  3. A wonderful, wise group of friends and colleagues who continue to support and mentor and advise each other on weekly calls- even after the program is over."
