Workshop Facilitator: Laurie Johnson

Laurie Johnson is a faculty member at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her research concentrates on eighteenth- through twenty-first-century intellectual history, literature, psychology, and visual studies, with particular emphasis on Romanticism and its afterlife. Her publications include three books and numerous articles and essays. Dr. Johnson has won several teaching awards, and was named Helen Corley Petit Scholar at the University of Illinois for exceptional research and teaching while on the tenure track. Her work has been supported by grants from the Fulbright and Humboldt foundations as well as by the German Academic Exchange Service. Dr. Johnson has taught and researched at a range of institutions, including public and private universities, a liberal arts college, and a community college. She also has studied or researched at several institutions overseas, including the Universities of Cologne, Tübingen, and Regensburg as well as the German Film Archive in Berlin; most recently, she was Visiting Professor for a year at the University of Ghent.

After earning tenure, Dr. Johnson attended an NCFDD campus workshop for mid-career professors, and then participated in the Faculty Success Program. Initially she only wanted a time-management tune-up. But she found much more than that: the NCFDD introduced her to a large and supportive community of scholars all seeking better work-life balance. Participants in NCFDD programs consistently work to transform their own life practices for the better; these changes ultimately affect the academy in positive ways. Johnson became a program coach, and then a Campus Workshop Facilitator. She loves sparking the same kinds of positive, healthy transformations in others that she experienced herself
