Why Mentor Matches Fail

A Note from Kerry Ann...

Kerry Ann Rockquemore, PhD
President, National Center for
Faculty Development & Diversity

At the NCFDD, we're focusing our work in 2016 on growth and deepening our member engagement. In that spirit, we just wrapped up our largest Individual Membership Drive ever, bringing our membership to 85,083 faculty, graduate students and post-docs. We're excited to be offering our resources to so many more people who are looking to not just survive, but THRIVE, in the Academy.

All of the growth that we’ve experienced recently at NCFDD is the result of a powerful pattern I learned from one of my mentors: actively seek out opportunities to serve others, listen to people’s needs, and provide the support and accountability mechanisms that will keep all of our members moving forward. So this month, I want to ask you: how can we support your growth? What information, resources, and/or community do you need to work at your highest potential? And what accountability structures do you have in place to keep growing?

We love serving you so we've got lots of new opportunities for you to stretch and grow this month. First and foremost, Professor Rosemarie Roberts will be sharing the #1 secret to time management (the Sunday Meeting) during this month's core curriculum webinar, How to Align Your Time with Your Priorities. And Professor Chavella Pittman will be offering this month's installment of our guest expert series on campus incivility: "Addressing Incivility in the Classroom: Effective Strategies for Faculty."

This month, we'll be giving campus workshops at the University of California, San Diego and University of the Pacific, and you'll meet one of our Certified Workshop Facilitators, Professor Rebecca Davis, who would love to come to your campus to work with faculty on Balancing Parenting and Productivity. Maybe your growth edge is finding a new job (check out our Career Center), or maybe it's time to explore our Faculty Bootcamp (be sure to read about how valuable Professor Emily Metzgar found the program). Or, maybe what you need more than anything is to expand your mentoring network! If so, you'll find that our feature article examines the reason that traditional mentor matches fail and provides suggestions on how to create a big and broad mentoring network.

No matter what your growth edge is, I hope our February Newsletter provides you with lots of opportunities to stretch, get engaged, and be supported in new ways!
