NCFDD May Newsletter
Why Won't My Students Finish Their Dissertations?

A Note from Kerry Ann...

This spring has been a big growth spurt for us at the NCFDD! We’ve welcomed 14 new universities as Institutional Members, seven of our new Workshop Facilitators traveled to 12 campuses to present 18 NCFDD workshops face-to-face with faculty, and I got to keynote the Faculty Women of Color Conference at the University of Illinois. We also hosted our biggest and best 14-Day Writing Challenge that supported 1877 academic writers in experimenting with developing a daily writing practice. We also just completed our most successful Faculty Bootcamp ever (95% of participants increased their productivity as a result of the program).

We're carrying that momentum into the summer so we've decided to dedicate this month's newsletter to a preview of the exciting programming we've set up for you to make this summer a peaceful and productive one!

2016 Faculty Women of Color in the Academy Conference

First and foremost, if you missed registration for the summer session of our Faculty Success Program you can sign up on the Waiting List. Sometimes we need a few people at the last minute to round out our small groups, so there's a chance you may get a spot.

By popular demand, Professor Rachel McLaren (University of Iowa) will teach an open webinar for everyone to jump-start their summer of productivity: Every Summer Needs A Plan. We're kicking off our summer multi-week courses with How to Craft and Submit a Winning Book Proposal in 4 Weeks, taught by Professor Badia Legardy (Loyola University, Chicago). Following that course, we'll offer How to Win an NIH Grant in June. If you're currently an NCFDD member, these courses are included in your annual membership. If you're not currently a member, we'll hold our summer Individual Membership Drive starting May 31.

Our feature article this month focuses on why graduate students don’t finish their dissertations. It’s a topic that is near and dear to our hearts and for which, we’ve designed our own Dissertation Success Program. Whether you’re a student trying to finish writing your dissertation or an advisor who doesn’t want to play the roles of writing coach, cheerleader, or taskmaster with your doctoral students, registration is open for the summer session of the program.

We are so excited about all of the resources we have planned for you this summer, and hope you'll find exactly what you need to boost your productivity!

Warmly,

Kerry Ann Rockquemore, PhD
President and CEO
