NCFDD June Newsletter

Note from Kerry Ann

GSV Labs in Redwood City, CA

Last week I walked through the door at GSVlabs in Silicon Valley to start a new chapter of NCFDD's development. We have joined their ed-tech incubator in order to work on our next level of our growth. Why would we do this when we already have over 77,000 members and just kicked off our largest summer session of Faculty Bootcamp ever (616 bootcampers, alumni and coaches!)? Because our mission is to help as many faculty as possible to truly THRIVE in the Academy.

We define THRIVING as the combination of explosive research productivity and having a full and healthy life beyond campus. Because we've helped many academics move from surviving to thriving, we feel confident in our core curriculum, our faculty bootcamp, and our campus workshops. During the year we will be at GSVlabs, we'll be focusing on increasing the number of Institutional Members we have so that more faculty, graduate students and post-docs who want to use our resources can have access to them.

Of course, all this is a big s-t-r-e-t-c-h for me (I haven't worn a badge or worked in a room with several hundred other people in a long time). But getting uncomfortable is part of the growth process. This month, we want to encourage you to stretch and grow, so we have plenty of opportunities for you to do so.

First and foremost, we are bringing back the wildly popular Joshua Schimel to provide members with a 4-week course based on his book Writing Science: How to Write Papers That Get Cited and Proposals That Get Funded. Then I'll be helping you to improve your writing productivity this month with our core curriculum webinar: Moving from Resistance to Writing. And at the end of the month we will be hosting a guest expert webinar with Terry McGlynn to tackle the difficult but important topic: The Art of Recovery (How to Bounce Back From a Tenure Denial). If you're currently an NCFDD member, all of these courses are included in your annual membership. If you're not currently a member, the summer is a perfect time to join our 77,000 member community. In fact, we're having an Individual Membership Drive starting next week (details below)!

We've also got some other goodies for you in our Newsletter! Meet one of our newly-tenured FSP Alumni (Delores McNair), our newest Institutional Member (UCLA), learn about SREB's upcoming Twitter Chat (focused on dissertation writing) and my campus workshops this month (NYU and Shippensburg University). And our feature article addresses the topic of early-career scholars and social media usage (Lets Talk About Twitter).

We are so excited about all of the webinars, courses, and community we have to support you this summer! We hope these resources contribute to YOUR continued stretching, growing and evolving!
