Are You Ready For a New Academic Year?

A Note from Kerry Ann...

August has arrived and you know what that means: time to ramp up for the 2015-2016 Academic Year! We're feeling a big transition here at NCFDD as we introduce our new Campus Workshop Facilitators and begin sending them all over the country delivering campus workshops.

Our New Campus Workshop Facilitators

We are welcoming the start of a new academic year with lots of excitement! We just finished our largest 14-Day Writing Challenge ever where we had more than 1,400 academics creating a daily writing habit that led to a whirlwind of projects moving out the door before the Fall term begins. This is also the final week of our summer Faculty Success Program where we've put a community of 580 bootcampers and alumni through a rigorous 12 weeks of writing! And because all that writing and productivity has been accompanied by full nights of sleep and weekends off, we're wrapping up the summer feeling invigorated!

How are YOU feeling heading into the new academic year? Are you feeling energized or exhausted? Are you feeling empowered by all of the progress you've made on your writing projects or overwhelmed by guilt, frustration and disappointment over another summer of not meeting your writing goals? Have you spent your summer writing or repeating deep patterns of procrastination, avoidance, and denial?

To support you this month, our feature article (Shut Up & Write) describes the different types of community, support and accountability structures you can create for your writing. We’re also offering great webinars this month focused on improving and expanding your professional relationships, setting up and managing a lab, and grant writing. I will be teaching this month’s core curriculum webinar: Cultivating Your Network of Mentors, Sponsors, and Collaborators and Dr. Noni Gaylord-Harden will deliver our guest expert webinar on How to Successfully Set Up and Manage a Lab. We'll also complete our Everything You Need to Know About Grant Writing multi-week course.

Plus, I'm so excited to announce brand new programming! For graduate students, we're launching our first-ever Dissertation Success Program, and in September we're beginning a new series of guest expert webinars, "How to Be an Effective Public Intellectual." Each month, we'll bring in an expert to interview and we're kicking off the series on September 9 with Mark Anthony Neal, author of the popular blog NewBlackMan. Information on how to register for the session is below, and it's open to anyone!

No matter when your academic year begins, we hope that this month's resources will help you to transition into the new year from a position of confidence and certainty that the most important work will get done.
